Join Dr Shane Nanayakkara (interventional, structural and heart failure cardiologist) and A/Prof Ralph Audehm (General Practitioner), as they describe the diagnostic process in HFpEF and explore the differences between the management of HFpEF and heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF).

The diagnosis and management of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) has been significantly updated as a result of the 2022 Australian consensus statement on heart failure. This update, as well as recent TGA approval, means that Australian patients now have access to the latest recommended pharmacological treatment for HFpEF.

In this webinar you will learn how to diagnose HFpEF and distinguish it from heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) or heart failure with mildly reduced ejection fraction (HFmrEF). Our expert speakers will also discuss pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment options for HFpEF, including practical management steps to ensure optimal outcomes for your patients.

Learning outcomes:

By completing this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the key role GPs play in the ongoing management of heart failure (HF), using medications and non-pharmacological treatments, and working proactively with the cardiology team
  • Determine the diagnostic work-up when HF is suspected, and understand some of the pitfalls that may lead to you missing a HF diagnosis
  • Describe pathophysiological and aetiological differences between heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF)
  • Recognise specific risk factors for HFpEF, and describe differences in the typical symptoms and signs for HFpEF and HFrEF
  • Explain how the pharmacological treatment of HFpEF differs from HFrEF, evaluate treatment for people with HFpEF and appraise the clinical evidence supporting this

Presented by Presented by Dr Shane Nanayakkara and Associate Professor Ralph Audehm.

Dr Shane Nanayakkara

MBBS PhD FRACP

Shane grew up in regional Australia, studied medicine at Monash University, and completed advanced physician training in Cardiology at The Alfred Hospital. After achieving his PhD in heart failure, he completed a fellowship in coronary intervention, and is currently completing a further fellowship in transcatheter structural heart interventions, including a keyhole approach to valve replacement and repair. He performs coronary angiography, coronary stenting, and advanced interventional techniques. He is passionate about both face to face care and telemedicine, particularly with his rural background. Shane’s research focused on heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, with his work winning the National Heart Failure Prize from the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand, and he was awarded the Mollie Holman Medal for best thesis from the Monash University medical faculty.

A/Prof Ralph Audehm

MBBS, DipRACOG

Associate Professor Audehm has over 30 years as a full time GP with interest in chronic disease management and quality improvement in general practice. He has implemented translational projects into general practice including diabetes prevention, diabetes management, heart failure management and domestic violence. He has close links to the Department of General Practice, University of Melbourne, and participates in research and teaching of medical students.

This session is sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim and Eli Lilly Alliance.
