Vitamin D deficiency is a common condition with implications for bone health, and in Australia it is especially important to balance sun exposure risk with vitamin D intake. This video module provides practical guidance on identifying people at risk of this condition, and outlines the latest evidence behind various forms of vitamin D supplementation.
On completion of this educational activity participants will be able to:- Identify patients who have risk factors for vitamin D deficiency
- Be aware of updated sun exposure guidelines, especially for those people with dark skin
- Assess vitamin D levels in patients against reference values utilising current MBS criteria
- On the basis of an understanding of the importance of vitamin D and calcium for bone health, identify those patients for whom vitamin D supplementation, with increased calcium, may be useful
