This video module will explore the importance of questioning patients about dry eye in general practice. Gain a deeper understanding of the multifactorial causes of dry eye and the importance of the tear film. Recognise the different types of dry eye and appropriate ocular lubricants, and upskill to implement best practices for dry eye management.

Learning outcomes:

By completing this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  • Evaluate the multifactorial causes of dry eye disease, including medications, systemic diseases and environmental factors.
  • Understand the tear film components, the different types of dry eye and their prevalence.
  • Analyse which type of artificial tears may benefit the different types of dry eye .
  • Develop strategies to recommend further options for dry eye management.

A/Prof Markoulli is an Associate Professor at the School of Optometry and Vision Science at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. Her research interests relate to the ocular surface in health and disease. She is deputy editor for Clinical and Experimental Optometry and the postgraduate coordinator for the School of Optometry and Vision Science at UNSW. She is also the Australian TFOS Ambassador and is on the steering committee of the upcoming TFOS workshop on “A Lifestyle Epidemic: Ocular Surface Disease”.
