    Activity aim

    This two-part clinical audit begins with a 1-hour pre-learning activity on OSA and its diagnosis and management.  In part one of the audit, you will review your record-keeping in ten patients with obesity, to assess wheter you have enquired about and reported signs and symptoms of OSA.  In part two of the audit, you will review the management of five patients with OSA and comorbid obesity and compare it with Australasian Sleep Association recommendations for OSA, and best practice guidance on weight management.

    Inclusion criteria

    Patients who are eligible for this clinical audit are adults who are:

    • Aged 18 years or older
    • Not previously diagnosed with OSA
    • Are living with obesity*

    *Defined as a BMI of 30 or greater for the majority of the population, or BMI 27.5 for South Asian, Southeaster Asian, Eastern Asian and Australian Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people, as per the 2022 Australian obesity management algorithm.1

    How long should it take?

    The program has been designed to take approximately 4-6 weeks to complete. This includes patient recall from your practice, patient consult and program evaluation.

    Recruitment may occur:

    • Opportunistically as you consult appropriate patients as part of usual care.
    • By active recall.

    Learning outcomes

    On completion of this clinical audit, you will be able to:
    Evaluate Australian and international recommendations for the holistic management of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).
    Assess signs and symptoms indicative of OSA in patients with obesity to identify those at risk of this condition.
    Develop an individualised management plan for OSA that takes into consideration personal and lifestyle factors.
    Apply evidence-based recommendations to prescribe optimal weight-loss and device therapy to manage OSA and improve the patient's sleep and quality of life.
    Identify patients with complex or severe OSA who should be referred for specialist management.

    A/Prof Kilov is a founding member of the RACGP Diabetes Specific Interest Group, co-founder of the Primary Care Diabetes Society of Australia and past Editor in Chief of this Society’s journal. He is a contributor to the current RACGP diabetes handbook, and a member of several National Diabetes Supply Scheme Expert Reference Groups. He has presented papers and conducted numerous educational sessions at national and international seminars and conferences, and has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals.
