Severe asthma affects up to 1 in 10 patients with asthma.1 While commonly misunderstood to be just a worse category of mild asthma, severe asthma has a different pathobiology to milder asthma and requires specific management.1,2 This mini-audit will help GPs to identify and refer patients with severe asthma, as recommended by Australian guidelines.2
This mini-audit includes a 1hour pre-learning module, followed by a mini-audit where you apply your learnings by reviewing the management of two patients with severe asthma.

Inclusion criteria
Patients who are eligible for this audit:
- Are 18 years of age or over
- Have an established diagnosis of asthma
- Are taking maximal inhaled therapy for their asthma regularly, comprising a high-dose inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) and a long-acting beta2 agonist (LABA), whether as combination therapy or separately
- Report poor symptom control
- Have not yet been referred to a specialist for management of their asthma
How long should it take?
The program has been designed to take approximately 4-6 weeks to complete. This includes patient recall from your practice, patient consult and program evaluation.
Tips to recruit patients
Recruitment may occur:
- Opportunistically as you consult appropriate patients as part of usual care.
- By active recall.
