    Activity aim

Severe asthma affects up to 1 in 10 patients with asthma.1 While commonly misunderstood to be just a worse category of mild asthma, severe asthma has a different pathobiology to milder asthma and requires specific management.1,2 This mini-audit will help GPs to identify and refer patients with severe asthma, as recommended by Australian guidelines.2

This mini-audit includes a 1hour pre-learning module, followed by a mini-audit where you apply your learnings by reviewing the management of two patients with severe asthma.

Why take part in this program?

    • Apply the latest guideline recommendations to optimise management of two patients in your practice with uncontrolled severe asthma.
    • Earn 4.5 CPD hours upon completion.

    Inclusion criteria

Patients who are eligible for this audit:

    • Are 18 years of age or over
    • Have an established diagnosis of asthma
    • Are taking maximal inhaled therapy for their asthma regularly, comprising a high-dose inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) and a long-acting beta2 agonist (LABA), whether as combination therapy or separately
    • Report poor symptom control
    • Have not yet been referred to a specialist for management of their asthma

    How long should it take?

The program has been designed to take approximately 4-6 weeks to complete. This includes patient recall from your practice, patient consult and program evaluation.

    Tips to recruit patients

    Recruitment may occur:

    • Opportunistically as you consult appropriate patients as part of usual care.
    • By active recall.
