Epilepsy is a common problem for older adults, and has a greater impact in older people compared to younger populations. This module describes key differences between the causes and presentation of epilepsy in older versus younger people, as well as special considerations for prescribing antiseizure drugs for older people. This two-hour activity contains a online learning module as well as a patient review exercise involving preparation of a GP Management Plan for a patient.
Strong steps in osteoporosis: Learning a step-wise approach to identifying and preventing osteoporotic fracture
This module takes participants though a step-wise model which helps identify patients at risk of osteoporotic fracture, and looks at strategies for prevention and ongoing management.
This education module focuses on a case study of an uncomplicated patient with type 2 diabetes, and the process of intensifying to first injectable therapy. Expert video commentary throughout the module helps step the participant through the decision cycle from the ADA/EASD consensus guidelines for T2D. This module also includes Australian recommendations for patients fasting during Ramadan.
In this education module, the participant will work through a case study of a type 2 diabetes patient with ASCVD risk factors. The case study uses the decision cycle from the ADA/EASD consensus guidelines for T2D, and features expert video commentary. The module also discusses patient-related concerns leading to clinical inertia, including useful management decisions when faced with this issue.
This education module takes a case-study based look at the management of a type 2 diabetes patient with established ASCVD. Featuring expert video commentary, participants will use the decision cycle from the ADA/EASD consensus guidelines for T2D to work through a hypothetical case study. This module also discusses GP-related causes of clinical inertia, as well as additional patient factors such as obesity, low health literacy and diabetes distress.
This module looks at the common causes of under-diagnosis and misdiagnosis of hereditary haemochromatosis in Australia. Participants will learn how to determine when hereditary haemochromatosis should be part of their differential diagnosis. The module also covers iron study test results and how to explain these results to patients.
This module provides an overview of hereditary haemochromatosis and the symptoms of iron overload. Participants will gain an understanding of how to interpret iron study results, and how to determine when genetic testing is warranted. The module also covers how to access the therapeutic venesection service offered by the Australian Red Cross Blood Service.
In this module, participants will learn about appropriate induction and maintenance venesection schedules for patients with hereditary haemochromatosis, as well as circumstances that warrant referral to a specialist. Participants will also learn how to access the Australian Red Cross Blood Service (ARCBS) High Ferritin app, and how to use it to screen patients for their eligibility to access therapeutic venesection. The module also looks at how to access local alternatives to the ARCBS therapeutic venesection service.
