Meningococcal disease in infants, children and adolescents can progress rapidly, making prevention and early recognition critical. This session will provide GPs with the latest Australian epidemiology, including current serogroups and invasive disease trends. Learn about vaccine recommendations and types, vaccine considerations across different states, and gain confidence in recognising red flags and when to instigate urgent medical attention.

Learning outcomes

By completing this learning activity, participants will be able to:
Identify the early signs and symptoms of meningococcal disease in children, and when to escalate to urgent medical attention
Describe the epidemiological state of meningococcal disease in the Australian context, including current serogroups and invasive disease trends
Outline the importance of meningococcal disease prevention and the critical role of current vaccine recommendations in this area, including any state-specific considerations
Professor Paul Griffin

Professor Griffin is an infectious diseases physician and clinical microbiologist, the Director of Infectious Diseases at Mater Health Services, and conjoint Head of the Mater Clinical Unit for the University of Queensland School of Medicine. He is an accomplished clinical trial investigator, particularly in infectious diseases, including novel vaccines and COVID-19 vaccines. He also serves as a board member and scientific advisory board member of the Immunisation Coalition, becoming a trusted media authority and spokesperson nationwide during the COVID-19 pandemic.
