Welcome to the headspace GP Advanced course: Developmental Disorders in Young People. This activity seeks to educate health professionals on issues surrounding the identification and support of young people with developmental disabilities, along with their mental health care. Utilising a number of case studies, ways of offering the best possible evidence-based care for young people in an effective and inclusive manner are explored.

This advanced course consists of four sequential parts. Each part will take approximately one and a half hours to complete.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the key transitions in mental development during adolescence and their interactions with developmental disorders and mental health
  • Apply practical approaches to the assessment and ongoing management of developmental disorders including the need for careful differential diagnosis
  • Utilise screening and assessment resources available to GPs and their patients, together with referral pathways for diagnosis and support
  • Understand the challenges of accessing specialist health services and providing support in rural and remote areas
  • Engage families, carers and educators in working with young people with developmental disabilities and offering peer support

Any GP who is not registered with the RACGP or ACRRM and has successfully completed all components of the accredited MHST can apply to the GPMHSC for individual recognition of learning. Please email the GPMHSC at gpmhsc@racgp.org.au for further information.
