Welcome to the headspace ALM on Developmental Disorders in Young People. This activity seeks to educate health professionals on issues surrounding the identification and support of young people with developmental disabilities, along with their mental health care. Utilising a number of case studies, ways of offering the best possible evidence-based care for young people in an effective and inclusive manner are explored.

This ALM consists of four sequential parts. Each part will take approximately one and a half hours to complete.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the key transitions in mental development during adolescence and their interactions with developmental disorders and mental health
  • Apply practical approaches to the assessment and ongoing management of developmental disorders including the need for careful differential diagnosis
  • Utilise screening and assessment resources available to GPs and their patients, together with referral pathways for diagnosis and support
  • Understand the challenges of accessing specialist health services and providing support in rural and remote areas
  • Engage families, carers and educators in working with young people with developmental disabilities and offering peer support

*In this module, a young person is defined as a person aged between 12 and 25 years.

If you are an Australian GP, you are able to access the additional mental health MBS item numbers (2712, 2713, 2715 and 2717) by completing the Mental Health Skills Training (Modular Pathway), which requires both a Mental Health Skills Training Core Module and a Clinical Enhancement Module to be completed.

Any GP who is not registered with the RACGP or ACRRM and has successfully completed all components of the accredited MHST, can apply to the GPMHSC for individual recognition of learning. Please call (03) 8699 0554 or email the GPMHSC to discuss this further.
