Understanding MBS for Rural General Practice

Course Overview

Welcome to Understanding the Medicare Benefits Schedule for Rural General Practice. We’re all busy and MBS billing can be complex so course facilitator Shane Hatton makes a mole-hill out of a mountain of MBS information out there!
The course content has been developed from our face-to-face workshops so contains information about MBS claiming that is commonly requested by rural NSW GPs and general practice staff. It’s broken down into bite-sized chunks so you can learn as required. We suggest you begin with The Essentials then Navigating MBS Online, followed by topics commonly used in your practice.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course you will:

  • Have a greater understanding of the value of the Medicare Benefits Scheme (MBS) and the Practice Incentives Program (PIP) to your practice.
  • Have a greater understanding of the MBS guidelines for MBS item numbers commonly used in rural NSW general practice.
  • Be more confident in navigating MBS Online to find guidelines around item numbers commonly used by your practice.
  • Understand who bears primary responsibility for ensuring the correct item numbers are claimed, and for ensuring appropriate patient safeguards are put in place when services are provided on behalf of and under the supervision of a GP.

This course is accredited for RACGP and ACRRM points. Each module is minimum 1 hour duration and a Certificate of Completion is issued on completion of each module, providing evidence for any self-directed learning claims.
